FINANCE 5 Qualities Needed For a Career in Finance

If you are looking for a high profile and lucrative career option, there aren’t many industries that can give you the opportunities that the financial sector can.  Every year, whether it is regular recruitment or annual drives such as the opening of graduate schemes, competition for finance jobs seems to get more intense. As a result of the huge demand for positions, finance companies are in the enviable position of truly being able to select the “best of the best” when it comes to who they want to employ.

Are you at the stage in your life where you’re starting to consider what you might like to do for a career? Or have you decided that you want to be a finance professional but want to know exactly what you should be great at?

For A Successful Finance Career These Qualities Can Help:

Your Job = Your Life

Most people who enter the finance professions do so on the understanding that work/life balance isn’t something they’re probably going to experience an awful lot of, particularly during the early years of their career when they’re looking to make their mark.

Finance industry high fliers didn’t get to where they are today because they left the office at 5pm on the dot every day. If you can put your life aside for at least a few years, you’ll do very well.

Experience

How do you get experience without having done the job first? You don’t, which is why the early years of your time in any industry, let alone the financial one, are so crucial. If you do want a head start then an internship is usually the best way to go, particularly if you know you’re going to be applying to the same company for a full time finance job or graduate placement in the near future.

Ambition

A lack of ambition will get you nowhere in life. People like ACPI Investments co-founder Alok Oberoi are a great example of how ambition can help you be a success in the finance world, having worked for Goldman Sachs before starting his own firm.

Not everyone will have ambitions to follow a similar path, but your ambition should at least be to do a 10 out of 10 job every time you set foot in the office.

Willingness to Learn

If you’re not a good sponge then you should really consider whether the finance industry is the right call for you. There is so much to take in that even those who consider themselves geniuses can struggle to get to grips with everything they need to know. Mental strength coupled with a strong willing to learn is a must have.

Foreign Languages

Learning a new language isn’t a massive essential, but if you want to travel the world and work in different offices, as well as make yourself more attractive to potential new employers down the line, a second, third, and even a fourth language is something that you always need to have in your locker.
